Villain's cigarette-alcohol, sperm depletion in Bengali men, new research signals danger
Over the past four years, research has been conducted on 400 couples who are unable to conceive. They failed to conceive even after one year of continuous sexual intercourse without using a condom or any contraceptive method. Experts call this the same infertility. If there is no child in Bengali gharana, first the finger is pointed at the woman. Most of the time the wife is blamed. New research shows that at least 50 percent of men are responsible for not having children.
Researchers at Calcutta University have blamed alcohol and cigarettes, as well as anxiety, fast food and coffee, for the decline in male sperm count. If the number of sperm per milliliter is less than 15 million or one and a half crore, then pregnancy can be a problem. The 400 couples selected in the joint study were all barren. Semen tests on more than half of these men found that the number of sperm was much lower than needed. The study was conducted under the supervision of Sujoy Ghosh, Professor, Department of Zoology, Calcutta University and Vaidyanath Chakraborty, Distinguished Physician. The American ‘Molecular Genetics and Genomics Medicine’ has published it.
