How Healthcare Began:
A Key Part of Human Life
The story of medicine started long, long ago. Back then,
people relied on nature. They used plants, natural things, and even magical
beliefs to heal the sick. We're looking back at ancient civilizations like
Mesopotamia, Egypt, and the Indus Valley in this NewsWebFit blog post.
In these places, people slowly started to develop ways to treat diseases and
stay healthy.
Ancient Egyptians were very good at surgery and using herbs
for medicine. Their methods were not just for their time; they also guided
future civilizations. In ancient Greece, a man named Hippocrates is called the
father of modern medicine. He used logic and observation to treat people. His
methods opened a new door in the world of medicine. After that, civilizations
in Rome, China, and India developed their own methods. For example, India
developed Ayurveda, which focuses on a person's whole body and mind for good
health. We at NewsWebFit believe that as human society grew, the need
for good healthcare also grew bigger and bigger.
The Spread of Healthcare and Why It's So Important
As people started living in big cities and countries, the
need for healthcare became even greater. When more people lived together,
diseases spread fast. To control this, a well-organized medical system was
needed. During the Middle Ages, the Islamic world significantly advanced the
field of medicine. Doctors like Al-Razi and Ibn Sina discovered new ways to
treat people and new medicines. European medical schools utilized Ibn Sina's
"The Canon of Medicine" for hundreds of years.
After the Renaissance, science grew fast in Europe, and so
did medical science. The concept of "public health" gained popularity
in the 18th and 19th centuries. This was not just about treating one person. It
was about keeping the whole community healthy. Governments started to focus on
clean water, good sanitation, and vaccines to stop diseases like cholera and
smallpox. This led to the creation of medical colleges and research centers all
over the world. We at NewsWebFit believe that today, modern healthcare
is not just for curing diseases. It is also very important for preventing them.
This idea is now the main rule for health policies around the world.
India's Healthcare Journey and the Birth of AIIMS
After India became independent in 1947, the country needed a
good healthcare system for its large population. Because of this, India's first
Prime Minister, Jawaharlal Nehru, and the first Health Minister, Rajkumari
Amrit Kaur, dreamed of building a world-class medical institution. AIIMS made
the dream a reality. It was started in 1956 under a special law. AIIMS in New
Delhi was named an "Institution of National Importance." It became a
major center for medical education, research, and high-quality healthcare.
The path to building AIIMS was not easy. An interesting
fact, as NewsWebFit found out, is that Prime Minister Nehru first wanted
to build the institution in Kolkata. But the Chief Minister of West Bengal at
the time, Bidhan Chandra Roy, did not agree with the plan. So, AIIMS was built
in New Delhi instead. (news source from weikipedia)
Getting money for such a big project was a huge challenge.
Rajkumari Amrit Kaur played a very important role in this. She was key in
getting a lot of money from the Government of New Zealand. This was the first
grant for the project. Over the years, she also got donations from big
international groups like the Rockefeller Foundation and the Ford Foundation.
She also got money from the governments of Australia, West Germany, and the
Netherlands. Her hard work and great vision helped India get this world-class
medical center, which is now a very important part of India's health system.
The PMSSY and the Growth of AIIMS
One medical center cannot help a whole country. So, in 2003,
the Government of India started the Pradhan Mantri Swasthya Suraksha Yojana
(PMSSY). The main goal of this plan was to fix the problem of not enough
affordable and good healthcare in different parts of the country. This was done
in two main ways: by building new hospitals like AIIMS and by making old
government medical colleges better. We at NewsWebFit believe this plan
was a huge step forward in India's medical history.
The PMSSY officially started in March 2006. It first
announced six new AIIMS-like hospitals. These new hospitals started working in
September 2012 through a special rule. After that, the All India Institute of
Medical Sciences (Amendment) Bill, 2012, was passed. This gave the new
hospitals more freedom to manage themselves and gave them the same important
status as the original AIIMS.

AIIMS Today: A Growing Network
The large network of AIIMS hospitals is taking the quality
of India's healthcare to a new level. Now, AIIMS not only gives great medical
care but also provides high-quality education and research opportunities for
new doctors. This is causing a healthcare revolution in India.
According to NewsWebFit's research, a total of 22 new
AIIMS hospitals have been announced since the first one in New Delhi. By early
2020, 15 of these were already open and working. It is expected that 8 more
will be open by 2025. Also, there are plans to build 6 more new AIIMS hospitals
in states like Arunachal Pradesh, Goa, Karnataka, Kerala, Mizoram, and Tripura.
This big expansion of the AIIMS network is helping bring high-quality healthcare to people in every part of India. It is not just in big cities but also in distant and rural areas. This growth of AIIMS is a bright example for the future of India's healthcare system. We at NewsWebFit wish these institutions continued success. They will make our country's health sector even stronger.
